A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO
UPPER CERVICAL CHIROPRACTIC
Upper Cervical is the art, science and philosophy of Chiropractic focused on the brainstem and the ATLAS and the AXIS, the first two vertebrae in the neck. It was researched and developed by Dr. B. J. Palmer at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa starting in 1930, and has been constantly refined since then
Upper Cervical Chiropractic is ever so more popular today, and not only for its remarkable results... It doesn’t require a twisting type manipulation that causes “neck cracking”, and it is a gentle, painless, and highly specific procedure.
The brain controls and coordinates each and every function of the body. The brainstem functions as a “switchboard”, by organizing the brain’s messages before passing them on to the spinal cord and the many billions of nerves. Life and health depend upon this vital communication, which must flow from the brain to the body, and from the body to the brain, without any interference whatsoever.
All of the brain’s communication with the body, and all of the body’s communication with the brain passes through the foramen magnum, a large opening at the base of the brain. Part of the brain called the brainstem (shown in red), extends through the foramen magnum down to the level of the AXIS, the 2nd vertebra in the neck. The Upper Cervical area is the most vital area of the body, since interference with the brain-body communication occurs here.
The brain controls and coordinates more than 250,000 different functions of the body simultaneously, including autoregulation and self healing, all without the need of our conscious thought, 24 hours a day. As long as there is no interference with the brain-body communication, the body will have the capacity to function at its full potential.
The 1st vertebra of the neck is the Atlas, named after Atlas of Greek mythology who supported the earth on his shoulders. This 2 ounce bone supports the weight of the head, and along with the Axis (C-2 vertebra), it allows for head rotation. The Atlas and Axis also house and protect the brainstem, which is the brain’s “switchboard”.
The C-1/C-2 articulation is the only one in the spine without an intervertebral disc. The unique design of the occiput/C-1 and C-1/C-2 articulations allow the Atlas and Axis to be free moving, making them susceptible to misalignments. Misalignments interfere with the brain-body communication. Only the Atlas and Axis vertebrae can move in three directions at the same time, adding to their vulnerability.
Any physical, chemical or mental trauma can cause a vertebral misalignment. For example: falls, stress, whiplash injuries, unresolved emotional issues, poor diet, trauma to the fetus during birth, a sedentary lifestyle, poor postural habits, improper physical exertion, any and all drugs, and various daily activities.
Subluxations of the Atlas or Axis block the normal flow of electrical impulses from the brain to the body.
A subluxation of the Atlas or Axis will compromise the brainstem and interfere with the correct communication from the brain to the body. Think of the power plant (1) as the brain, the transformer (2) as the subluxation, and the town (3) as the body. Any interference with the electrical energy sent by the power plant and relayed incorrectly by the transformer will create problems in the town.
An Atlas or Axis misalignment will cause body imbalances, interfere with the normal brain-body communication, and compromise the vertebral artery.
As a result of an Atlas or Axis misalignment, the range of motion of the head is also compromised.
"Every inch of Forward Head Posture can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” (Source: I. A. Kapandji; “The Physiology of the Joints: The Trunk and the Vertebral Column,” Volume 3, Churchill Livingstone, London).

The body always endeavors to maintain the eyes level with the horizon. An Atlas or Axis misalignment causes the head to tilt, which sets forth in motion a “chain of events” in the form of body and spinal imbalances.

The following animation features the mechanism of an Atlas subluxation at the base of the skull.
Upper Cervical Chiropractors do not treat symptoms or illnesses. They remove subluxations of the Atlas and Axis so that the brain-body communication can flow uninterrupted. Autoregulation and self healing can properly function once again when this interference is removed. Countless patients report improved overall health and great improvement with the following conditions…
Nothing is more important for our health then to have the Atlas and Axis properly aligned and having the brain communicating without interference with every part of our body.
The brain controls every function of the body, allowing us to self regulate, self heal, express emotions, sense our surroundings, think, and feel our connection with the universe. Upper Cervical Chiropractors remove the interference that causes improper body function and a diminished life experience. Without subluxations, our brain-body communication is reconnected, our health is restored, and once again we are connected with the universe.
It’s all very simple… Proper Alignment = Health Misalignment = Health Problems
